Die Kollektion ist während eines Auslandssemesters in Łódź zum Thema „100 Jahre Avantgarde in Polen“ entstanden. Dabei rücke ich mit feministischer Perspektive die unterschätzte Arbeit von Textilarbeiterinnen in den Fokus. Ich zolle ihrem Wissen und ihrer Hingabe Tribut, indem ich die Kraft und Schönheit textiler Werke zeige. So entschied ich mich beim Erstellen des Hauptstückes der Kollektion für die Technik des Teppichwebens, einer der ältesten textilen Techniken. Drei weitere Textilien sind digital gedruckt, scheinen aber durch entsprechende Optik gewebt. So versuche ich, eine alte Technik in eine Neue zu transferieren.
Hinsichtlich des Designs wurde ich von kaschubischen Blumen inspiriert, welche in einer Region im Norden Polens meist handgestickt werden. Mein Anliegen ist es, Aufmerksamkeit für textile Arbeiten zu erzeugen, ihre Relevanz und Stärke herauszuheben und so auf mehr Respekt für textile Handwerkerinnen zu hoffen.
My work focuses on the underestimated craft of women in the textile industry.
From a feminist perspective I honour embroideries of kashubian flowers, which are motives from the Kashuby region in the north of Poland. The emroideries symbolise the dedication female textile workers put into their creations, without getting an appropriate salary. Textile technologies like embroidering, knitting and crocheting are not taken seriously, because they are seen as something that housewives do.
As a tribute to the beauty of textile handicraft done by women and to value their knowledge, I decided to weave the main piece of my collection as tapestry, one of the oldest textile techniques. I chose the image of the vulva to provoke and thereby bring attention to my concern. I want to demonstrate female power and declare, that female work should be more appreciated!
Although feminist artists have been fighting for justice since the last century (cf. “The Dinner Party” from Judy Chicago), still too many walls have to be torn down. Let’s breach borders and start at equal respect and pay for women and men!
